Consultations

The consultation process

Seeking professional help for unwanted pet behaviour is a new experience for many people. To help you better understand what’s involved with a behaviour consultation, read on!

Before: I thoroughly review your pre-consultation questionnaire, and any videos you have of your pet exhibiting undesirable behavior (video footage is often helpful, but not required).

During: Our consultation will take place on Zoom (unless you are in New Plymouth where I can undertake a home visit). During our consultation, you'll have the opportunity to share your concerns about your pet's behavior, to ensure I understand your goals and how I can best assist both you and your pet.

We will then delve into a comprehensive history of your pet's behavior to uncover the underlying causes of their unwanted behaviour. I'll then explain the reasons behind your pet's behavior and address any questions you may have.

To conclude, I will provide a set of recommendations tailored to tackle the root emotions, motivations, and other factors contributing to your pet's unwanted behavior. If necessary, I may demonstrate training techniques and ask you to practice them while I observe and offer guidance. Once we've covered all aspects, answered your queries, and you feel equipped with clarity and a practical plan, we will conclude the session.

After: I will compile a report summarising my assessment and recommendations. I remain available in the coming days and weeks to address any questions you may have, and to review any video you obtain as you put into practice the strategies and ideas we have discussed.

The fee for this consultation package is $495, and includes:

1) The consultation itself - for as long as it takes – normally around 2 hours.

2) A report summarising my assessment of your pet’s behaviour, and the recommendations that I make during the consultation.

3) Correspondence with your vet.

4) Ongoing email support if necessary to ensure the treatment program is progressing as effectively as possible – including video review of your pet’s behaviour and training.

Resource guarding dog Badger
Mat’s explanations and suggestions made perfect sense to me and allowed me to see things from Badger’s point of view. His advice really was enlightening. The positive change in Badger was immediate, and his behaviour has continued to improve. I have gone from disliking myself and my pup, to having a bond with Badger that I feel will continue to strengthen as we grow together.

Follow-up sessions

During the initial consultation I aim to provide you with all the information and techniques necessary to resolve your pet's behavioural problem. Often this initial consultation and subsequent email and WhatsApp support is all that is required. However, follow-up sessions are usually very beneficial, and I recommend them. I charge a discounted rate of $200 for these sessions.
